At 75 I’m a retiring antique dealer who is beginning to clean out his stock of stored treasures.
For about forty years I was a pretty fanatical collector of early American flags and lots of other patriotic flag collectibles.
I was honored to have a great collection of them, but I always knew that I was only their custodian for a while and eventually it would be time to move them on to their next owner.
In addition to collecting our national banner, I also morphed into collecting the son in service banners that honored those who so gallantly served in wars defending our freedoms.
Son in service flags began in WW1 as is detailed in the recently published magnificent book “In The Service Of Our Country.”
At the same time in 1917 mothers who volunteered to help the wounded formed the “American War Mothers” which was subsequently chartered by Congress in 1925.
