World War II mileage rationing identification folder and coupon book.
Identification and coupons were issued to Joseph M. Ferguson of Newark, Delaware. His coupons were distributed on April 19, 1945, just 19 days before VE Day, ending the war in the European Theater, although of course that didn’t end rationing, because the Pacific war continued into August.
During the war, the government rationed gasoline not so much to preserve fuel, but tires and rubber material. At least early in the war, many on the home front were limited to three or four gallons a week and a nationwide 35 mph speed limit was in effect.
The fold-over ID card, when opened, measures approximately 3 ½” x 4 ½”.
The coupon book measures 5 3/8” x 3 ½”.
The unused coupon lot, when opened, measures approximately 5 1/8” x 8”.
Items are stored in a smoke-free environment.
