Magical Trees of Slavs: Thuja
Thuja (Thuja occidentalis or Thuja spp.) – is known to banish evil: “If it weren’t for thuja, and it weren’t for rue, the girl would be mine before anyone knew…” The demon said in a Carpathian legend. A pouch with twigs and needles from thuja were hung upon a girl’s neck to protect her against Letavets (Incubus). This plant also provides strength and protection during a magical ritual, which is why it is sometimes called a prayer-tree. Very suitable for household cleansings. Crushed branches and cones may be added to candles, and small branches tied in a bundle may be used for smudging.
Thuja is not a native plant to Slavic lands – it was introduced into Eastern Europe in XVIII century. Still, Slavic practitioners found use for this tree in folk medicine, as well as to remove jinxes and hexes.
Magically, thuja helps overcome difficulties, illness, achieve success, and eases mutual understanding in a love relationship. Psychologically and emotionally, it calms, balances, revitalizes, and aids to concentration of strength and attention. In folk medicine, it is used as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, liquefying, and expectorant aid for bronchitis, tracheitis, pneumonia, and asthma. Thuja is also a good diuretic and diaphoretic. It is used in prevention and treatment of cancer.
Young offshoots of thuja are used in the form of a decoction or a steam infusion to treat kidney, gall bladder, and liver stones, as well as other illness of kidneys, liver, and bladder, bunions, rheumatism, hydrops, and to rid of worms. In cosmetics, thuja refreshes and revitalizes skin, rids it of traces of exhaustion, treats dermatitis caused by allergies, stretchmarks, eczema, neurodermitis, mange, cellulitis, warts, and blisters.
Caution: thuja is poisonous, which is why when taken internally, recommended dosage should be strictly followed! Not recommended during pregnancy and to people suffering from epilepsy!
