Icom IC-746 & PRO constant cooling fan - Plug-n-play

Description

Offered here is a device to provide constant cooling for the IC-746 and IC-746PRO transceivers.  It is a small 12-volt fan that turns on and off with the radio.  It mounts on and is electrically connected to the Tuner Control Socket on the back of the radio and draws air out of the cabinet.  When used, warm air is drawn from the cabinet and cooler air enters the cabinet through the slots in the top cover just behind the numeric keypad and other slots on the rear panel.   This fan can only be used if the Tuner Control Socket is not used.  Most IC-746s have the automatic tuner built-in and this connector on the back radio goes unused.  The fan draws minimal current (0.08A) at 12 volts and runs at all times that the transceiver is turned on.  The fan is rated at 7.1 cfm.   The radio's internal fan is thermostatically controlled at a couple of different speeds and comes on and off depending on operation.  At most times during receive the internal fan is not running.
The fan offered here will function the same on both variants of the IC-746, PRO and nonPRO.  There are several components that have thermal issues in both radios that will benifit from constant air circulation.
This fan is added to the transceiver without even removing any covers.  You simply push it onto the connector as shown in the first photo.  The fan is mounted on a matching 4-pin Molex connector with professionally stripped and crimped terminals.  The fan can be removed at anytime simply by pulling it off of the connector.  A heavy gauge tie-wrap secures the fan to the connector.
I have had one of these fans on my 746PRO for two years now.  I often place my hand down stream of the fan at the end of a long net and notice the warm air it is evacuating from inside of the radio.  I feel a lot better with that fan running.   The fan is reasonably quiet.  Like all fans related to radio equipment, this one can be heard but it is not annoying.
Contesters and Net Control stations will particularly find the fan valuable in cooling the radio.  If the radio is nested in a console with poor ventilation and other sources of heat, the fan is highly recommended.
