1916 PANAMA Rare .9 SILVER Dime Size CINCO 5 CENTESIMOS Only 100,000 PIECES MADE
Description
This is a very pleasing and very scarce, silver, 1916
"Cinco"
or 5 Centesimos from the
"Republic of Panama"
. It is exactly the size, weight and silver purity of a silver, United States Dime.
Theodore Roosevelt had decided the United States needed a canal through the isthmus of Panama but the Columbians, who owned Panama, were driving a hard bargain.
So....
In 1903 Panama declared itself independent of Columbia and was instantly recognized by and signed a treaty with, the United States, to build the canal.
Panama picked the
"Balboa"
as a currency to replace the Columbian Pesos that were circulating. They based it on gold because they wanted the coinage to be compatible with the United States Gold Dollar then circulating. But when the silver coins were struck it didn't come out quite that way. The first Five Centesimos here had as much silver as a US Dime, the 25 Centesimos a Half Dollar, and the Fifty Centesimos was quite near the size and weight of a
"Morgan"
Dollar.
Weight: 2.50 Grams, 17.9 Millimeter, .900 Silver. Mintage 100,000.
As a comparison, the famous 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln Cent had a mintage of 484,000 pieces.

Obverse:
REPUBLICA DE PANAMA • 1916 • DIOS LEY LIBERTAD
(God, Law, Liberty, on Conquistador helmet)
• BALBOA below bust. Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the isthmus of Panama and was the first European to sight the Pacific Ocean, he did it in 1513.
Reverse:
CINCO CENTESIMOS DE BALBOA • G. 2.500 LEY 0.900 • Arms.
Start at sea level or zero, then climb 375 feet up a mountain and plant a flag. Walk 1800 feet,
(6 football fields)
slightly downhill, to a point still 325 feet high and plant another flag. Then get out your shovel and dig down to zero from both flags, and make your ditch 60 yards across at the zero level. Now, do that for the next NINE MILES. That's what it took to dig the tough part of the Panama Canal.
The Coin:
A very pleasant example of the scarcer of just 2 dates, the 1904 had a mintage of 1.5 million coins. It has passed through a few hands and earned some honest wear and a few marks doing so. Fully original, it has not been cleaned and is even scarcer and more desirable as such. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
